A long tradition of NEEDHA get-togethers at the ASEE Annual Meetings was continued this year, with an informal dinner held at the Sequoia restaurant in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, June 25, during the 1996 meeting. Nine department heads and five spouses participated. Larry Burton reports that the affair was lively and enjoyable, with excellent food. The group agreed unanimously that the event was successful, and should be repeated at next year's ASEE meeting in the same format.
Those attending included: Jim Roberts (U of Kansas), Al Klayton (US Air Force Academy), Rod and Tracy Soukup (U of Nebraska), Mark and Marge Sebern (Milwaukee School of Engineering), Everett and Marsha Sue Johnson (Wichita State U), Bill Hornfeck (Lafayette College), Al and Kathy Rosa (U of Denver), George Sackman (SUNY-Binghamton), and Larry and Barbara Burton (Penn State).
In years previous to 1995, a formal NEEDHA business meeting was held during the ASEE Annual Meetings. While many members felt that the opportunity to get together at ASEE was valuable, the number of department heads in attendance was not conducive to the conduct of NEEDHA business. An amendment to the NEEDHA Constitution eliminated this formal meeting, and it was decided to hold a social event in its place. It is hoped that this informal contact among heads at ASEE meetings will be more benficial than the business meeting format.
