The NEEDHA committee on ABET Criteria 2000 would like to present this status 
report to our members.  This represents a continuation of the work which was 
reported at the Orlando meeting, and reflects member input from that meeting.

Members Sherra Kerns, Ed Ernst, Barry Farbrother, John Orr, Raman 
Unnikrishnan, and Roger Webb met on April 13 and 14, 1997 in Nashville.  The 
committee was joined by George Peterson, Executive Director of ABET.  Other 
members of the committee are Paul Penfield, Steve Kang, and Bob White.

The committee has identified several opportunities to provide assistance in 
the implementation of Criteria 2000, to both the programs visited and to 
ABET/EAC.  We invite your comments on these items.  Please provide your 
advice, direction, and interest in participation, on any or all of these.  
Please reply to John Orr, orr@ece.wpi.edu, within the next two weeks.

Following is a list of intended activities of the NEEDHA Criteria 2000 
committee:

* Position Paper on selection and preparation of evaluators for Criteria 2000.  
A conceptualization of the process and materials will be drafted by July, 
1997.  Included will be an outline of materials for the program evaluations 
and visit reports.  This will be completed for presentation at the CEAA 
meeting in January, 1998.  Roger Webb will chair this effort, with Ed Ernst, 
and Sherra Kerns.
 
* Offer to assist IEEE/CEAA and ABET/EAC in the creation of Program Evaluation 
and Visit Report materials for the transition time period.
 
* Creation of supplementary Evaluator Preparation materials.  We intend that 
the initial materials will be made available for use at the Evaluator 
Preparation session prior to the NEEDHA meeting in March, 1998.

* Bibliography of materials relating to Criteria 2000, including Evaluation, 
Assessment and Process Aspects, with summaries/precis.  Barry Farbrother will 
coordinate this, including the creation of the initial list of materials.  
Precis will be prepared by committee members.

* NEEDHA White Paper on Criteria 2000.  A draft will be prepared by July, 
1997.  Ed Ernst is editor, assisted by Raman Unnikrishnan, John Orr, and Barry 
Farbrother.  Following is an outline of this white paper:
1. Long-term, steady-state view of Criteria 2000
2. Process for transition to Criteria 2000
3. Impacts on the way we do engineering education
4. Impacts on the stakeholders including faculty, students, and industry 
5. Examples of means to satisfy the criteria
6. problems and suggested approaches to resolution
7. ABET as an opportunity for long term improvement in engineering education
8. Affirmation of support for ABET in this process.

* Our plan is to incorporate the above material on the NEEDHA web site.

* Report to NEEDHA members at the March, 1998 Annual Meeting
