Bing Chen

Dr. Bing Chen is currently Professor and Chair of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Computer and Electronics Engineering (CEEN) Department at the Peter Kiewit Institute in Omaha, Nebraska. Starting out as an instructor, he has been an integral part of the department since 1967. He received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering at UNL (1967, 1969, and 1978, respectively).
Dr. Chen's teaching specialization is in the area of Control Systems and his research interest areas include passive solar energy and educational robotics. Dr. Chen is the PI to three NSF grants on educational robotics and one NCESR (Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research) grant on passive solar energy. In addition to authoring two books on passive solar energy, he has also coauthored several papers on the same topic along with papers on conductive concrete and freshmen retention.
Dr. Chen has conducted extensive renewable solar research projects with focused applications to developing nations. These research projects have actively involved several international students. He is also the proposer of the Silicon Prairie concept to integrate University, government and business interests in economic transformation. Along with the proposal of the Silicon Prairie, he has created the concept of the Scott Research Park, a collaboration between industry and the University of Nebraska. Dr. Chen has initiated direct programs of outreach into Duchesne Academy, an all-women's high school, to encourage female interest in engineering education. He is also developing research opportunities in support of local high-tech development, e.g., the SCOLA (Satellite Communications for Learning) international news telecast over Internet2.
