ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT HEADS ASSOCIATION

Fall 2012

Letter from the Editor

Pritpal Singh  Dear ECEDHA Members, Industry Partners, and Colleagues,

Welcome to the Fall 2012 issue of The ECEDHA Source. As I mentioned in the Summer 2012 issue, it is my pleasure to introduce The ECEDHA Source editorial committee members. They are: Kim Boyer, Zhihua Qu, Alan Sahakian, Keith Teague, and Lal Tummala. I appreciate their time and contributions to enhancing the quality of The ECEDHA Source newsletter.

Also, this is the first edition of The ECEDHA Source newsletter that is being distributed to a wider audience, including faculty members from ECEDHA member universities. Let me give a special welcome to these new readers - I hope you find this newsletter a useful resource.

In this issue of The ECEDHA Source we have an excellent feature article by Ken Connor and Mohamed Chouikha on using the Mobile Studio board for improving the teaching of electric circuits and electronics. This board contains circuitry to emulate a power supply, DMM and oscilloscope at much lower cost than traditional instrumentation. By interfacing to a computer, the board can be used to measure and analyze circuit and device parameters. While the Mobile Studio board was an excellent development, it is no longer available but commercial versions are being sold by Digilent and National Instruments. A focus spotlight on Digilent is also included in this edition of The ECEDHA Source.

It is also time to consider nominating a colleague for one of the ECEDHA awards. I would like to strongly encourage you to nominate a colleague who has been doing outstanding work in improving teaching or for contributions to ECEDHA. Details of the awards and the nomination process are also described in this newsletter.

The program for the ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo to be hosted by the University of Central Florida from March 22-26, 2013 is developing well and it should be another excellent conference. We are looking forward to seeing you in Orlando in March.

I wish you the best for the holiday season and the New Year and look forward to connecting again in 2013.

Warmest regards,

Pritpal Singh
