ECE SPOTLIGHT SCHEDULE

8:30 am - 8:50 am

ECEDHA - Digilent

Hands On Analog Design for Every Student: New Analog Discovery
Mr. Cole will introduce Digilent's new low cost Analog Design station called Analog Discovery. Building on Digilent's successful EE board and with support of Analog Devices, the Discovery board is half the price of the EE board but contains the same key features. At under $150, students can directly own Discovery and build and verify real circuits and systems with every assignment at any location. Studies show that students with their own kits learn more, learn better, and learn faster. Contact Mr. Cole to get a free demo of the new Analog Discovery board.

Presenter
Clint Cole
, President, Digilent Inc., Professor Washington State University

9:00 am - 9:20 am

ECEDHA - National Instruments

National Instruments—Do Engineering: The Return to the Era of Experimentation
Graduating skilled engineers and scientists who are prepared to solve the great engineering challenges of our time requires equipping them to be as audacious and productive as inventors like Thomas Edison. One of the keys to Edison's success was his laboratory where, with access to all of the tools he needed, he could test his theories at the moment of inspiration. In this session, we'll discuss how cost, accessibility, and individualized learning have inhibited recreating the Edison experience, and how you can eliminate those barriers through the use of practical technology solutions that prepare students to do engineering.

Presenter
Mark Walters
, Academic Product Manager, National Instruments

9:30 am - 9:50 am

ECEDHA - MathWorks

Enabling Project-Based Learning with MATLAB, Simulink, and Target Hardware
Project-based learning is effective because students can see, hear, and touch what would otherwise be very abstract. In this presentation, we show how you can use MATLAB and Simulink to prototype, test, and run models on a broad range of low-cost target hardware to teach courses.New with Release 2012a, Simulink can automatically generate standalone applications to run in real time on the BeagleBoard and LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT hardware platforms without the need for MATLAB Coder or Simulink Coder. Using this new capability, we explore integrating simulation and hardware.

Presenter
Tom Gaudette
, Principal Academic Evangelist, MathWorks

10:00 am - 10:20 am

ECEDHA - Agilent

Innovating Next Generation Wireless and Communications Technologies with an Integrated Design, Validation and Test Strategy
The insatiable demand for higher performing more advanced wireless technologies is driving paradigm shifts in how engineers are solving communications challenges. This Spotlight will review the emerging challenges and demonstrate how an integrated design, validation and test strategy can accelerate the development of these next generation wireless technologies.

Presenter
Ron Harrison
, Market Development Manager, Agilent Technologies

10:30 am - 10:50 am

ECEDHA - AMD

AMD Fusion Centers of Innovation
On Jan 17th AMD announced its first AMD Fusion Center of Innovation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,designed to focus on the innovative developer environment and software performance advancements enabled by heterogeneous computing. The center will fund, mentor and promote new commercial enterprises emerging from the vast intellectual property and research expertise in the University of Illinois community. Through access to AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) technology and platforms, the AMD Fusion Center of Innovation will help bridge access to new AMD heterogeneous computing technology with the innovative spirit stimulated and nurtured on campus. AMD intends to expand the Fusion Centers of Innovation to other leading Universities.

Presenter
Ray Schuder
, Senior Managing Director AMD Ventures and AMD Fusion Centers of Innovation, AMD

11:00 am - 11:20 am

ECEDHA - Renesas ECEDHA - BNS Solutions

Renesas Electronics & BNS Solutions University Program for Embedded Systems
Renesas Electronics and BNS Solutions have teamed up to design, build, and support kits for teaching embedded systems design in a university setting. These kits, and accompanying materials, address a weakness in embedded systems education: solving problems from a system level. Learning to use a microcontroller is different than many other semiconductor and integrated devices. It is not enough to understand how the device functions; more emphasis must be placed on how it fits in the overall system. BNS will present the kits, the approach, and the Renesas University program to show how they can dramatically enhance the teaching of embedded systems and hot students will be better prepared to enter the industry upon graduation.

Presenter
Vin D'Agostino
, Principal, BNS Solutions

11:30 am - 11:50 am

ECEDHA - Freescale

Learn. Apply. Compete. The Freescale Cup
The Freescale Cup is the perfect platform for students to learn and apply electrical (circuitry, interfacing and software design) and mechanical engineering (control theory) concepts, as well as sharpen their communication and team work skills. Furthermore, students can then complete their car designs and compete in The Freescale Cup Challenge.

Presenter
Andy Mastronardi
, Global Director University Programs, Freescale

12:00 Noon - 12:20 pm

ECEDHA - Eaton

Practical Control Requirements for Power Systems with Integrated Generation, Storage and Load Assets
Low volume 'efficient and clean' power market opportunities require a new look at distributed component based embedded intelligence for flexibility and system level optimization for broad efficiency optimization. This is particularly true for Microgrid, Electrified Transportation and Equipment and Net Zero applications.

Presenter
Peter Theisen
, Principle Engineer, Power Systems and Architectures, Innovation Center, Eaton Corporation

12:30 pm - 12:50 pm

ECEDHA - Cypress Semiconductor

Learn how PSoC (Programmable System on Chip) Can Enhance Engineering Education
PSoC is a device consisting of programmable analog modules, programmable digital modules and an MCU (ARM Cortex M3 or 8051) all on one piece of silicon. Coupled with the PSoC Creator IDE, PSoC enables the hands on teaching of many classes from fundamentals of digital and analog to embedded systems and beyond using one technology and one software platform. Students learn the device architecture and design flow once and can spend most of their time building projects. To learn more about this exciting technology visit www.cypress.com/go/psoc.

Presenter
Patrick Kane
, Director, Cypress University Alliance; Cypress Semiconductor Corp.

1:00 pm - 1:20 pm

ECEDHA - Quanser

Emerging Undergraduate Lab Concepts: Case Studies and Applications
Session description: Recruitment and retention of talented students, connecting the lab experience to modern industry, and enriching the experience through interdisciplinary perspectives, are the motivating factors that have triggered recent projects between Quanser, and various universities. This presentation offers an overview of the technologies and methodologies that are emerging to meet today's education challenges.

Presenter
Leor Grebler
, Academic Solutions Advisor, Quanser
