- Impact of Current Economy
Endowments down
Hiring freeze in various institutions
No raises this year and next for some. One institution has a mandatory 1-2% contribution to retirement.
Limited searches allowed for faculty/staff positions
Some institutions have budget cuts this year. Rumors of cuts for next year.
Furlough plan in effect, but not implemented. Higher-paid employees impacted first.
- ABET
Some discussion on program objectives. Two institutions have advisory boards that review them every year.
ISU has a course combining prob/stat/disc math.
Using the FE exam for assessment - OSU looks at topics related to ECE. Students are not required to take/pass FE.
Assessing ethics - Possibilities: (1) grade homework, (2) OSU tracks cheating cases and reports them on a dept basis. Majority of engineering students cheat, but smaller percentage than business.
- Power and Energy Programs
Discussed the courses and programs offered at the various institutions represented at the meeting.
- OU - Tulsa Telecommunications Engineering program
Brief review of the program
- Other Discussion
National Public Radio had an article about disciplines not having enough graduates - EE was only engineering—related one mentioned.
Why is ME more popular?
(1) Focus on robotics, which is more mechanical. Trying to counter that in UN-Omaha. Most of the robotic system is electrical. Take freshman to Lockheed-Martin. They will retire more engineers than all EE output in US.
(2) Perception of more stability in ME-related jobs. Less susceptible to out-sourcing.
Next Fall Meeting:
UN-Omaha
