We hope you enjoy the second edition of The ECEDHA Source E–Newsletter. We are pleased to offer two feature articles on jobs and educational opportunities outside of the typical ECE career path.
We hope to see you in March for the ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo. Note the new name and addition of the ECExpo which will provide new opportunities for the members to meet vendors who can enhance your students' educational experiences.

"ECE Students working with Nursing Students to Improve Health Care for the Poor"

Many rural areas of the world have limited access to good health care because of the lack of availability of health care professionals. Electrical and computer engineering technologies, including communication systems, webcams, power sources, and computers, offer the opportunity to collect patient data remotely, process it, and store it for immediate diagnosis or for future reference. In the article we will present a description of some joint project work being proposed between Nursing students and faculty and electrical and computer engineering students and faculty, to develop improved health care systems based on ECE technologies.

"Engineering as a Liberal Art: Taking a Broad View"

Engineering education is sometimes characterized as being rigorous but not as broad as a traditional liberal arts education. As Leah Jamieson of Purdue University eloquently explains, the best education for engineers is certainly rigorous but is in no way narrow. In fact, the strength of this nation's technological enterprise - and hence its overall competitiveness - demands engineers who combine technical knowledge with creativity, teamwork and a broad understanding of the society in which they work.

Jim Roberts, ECEDHA Central States Organizer, Remembered
|
|
With sadness we report the passing of our colleague Dr. Jim Roberts of the University of Kansas who died of cancer in early September. Jim was the EE department head at Kansas when at our 1992 annual meeting in Kona, HI a group of chairs in attendance decided that a fall regional meeting should be held for those departments in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Jim hosted and coordinated the first meeting in Lawrence that fall. At that meeting, Jim was chosen to be the first Central States secretary/treasurer.

At your regional meetings and within your own universities, please determine at least one candidate you feel is worthy and submit your letter of recommendation to the ECEDHA office by January 1.
