Dear ECEDHA Members and Partners,

As the academic year comes to a close, I want to reflect on what a great year it has been for ECEDHA.

The ECEDHA Annual Conference and the inaugural ECExpo was a huge success drawing nearly 200 department heads from across North America for networking and discussions on timely topics for academia.

The addition of the ECExpo and ECE Spotlight Seminars introduced the opportunity for our department heads to fully engage with corporate industry partners to learn how their products and services could benefit departments, faculty, and students.

We have completed a successful first year of The ECEDHA Source e-Newsletter which has provided a platform to communicate the latest information and to keep you all current on relevant news for our organization. In this issue we have two excellent feature articles discussing ECE curriculums. The first article is by Prof. and Head Ed Schlesinger and Prof. Bruce Krogh of CMU discussing the ECE curriculum at CMU. Prof. Schlesinger is also the 2010-2011 President of ECEDHA. The second article is by Prof. and Head Moshe Kam from Drexel University discussing reforms to the ECE curriculum. Prof. Kam is also the 2010 President Elect of IEEE.

Feel free to contact me about the newsletter and any suggestions you may have for future feature articles. I hope you have an enjoyable summer and look forward to another exciting year for ECEDHA!

Best regards,
A Kuh

Electrical and Computer Engineering for a New Generation
By T.E. Schlesinger and B. Krogh

Electrical and Computer Engineering and similarly named departments that developed out of Electrical Engineering share an important characteristic, namely, the ability to evolve in response to changing trends in science and technology and to redefine what comprises this discipline. At the same time Electrical and Computer Engineering as a discipline has had and continues to offer students the opportunity to be trained for success in a broad spectrum of career options.

It is Broke and it Needs Fixin'
By Moshe Kam

The desire to reform the Engineering curriculum is a recurring theme in public speeches and essays, which are produced with some regularity by engineering educators and academic administrators. It is such a popular topic, that one wonders what will all the after-dinner speakers do if we actually did something about reform rather than continue to muse idly about it.
