New Semester, New Perspectives

By: Badri Roysam, University of Houston

Dear ECEDHA Members, Industry Partners, and Colleagues,

The new semester is here. Much has changed since January 2020. Much more has remained the same – especially our commitment to delivering a quality education, whatever it takes!

Thankfully, we now have a much better handle on the instructional methods, software tools, and equipment needed to fulfill our mission. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of these tools and methods are rooted in ECE technologies. Our thanks go out to the many corporate members of ECEDHA who rapidly stepped up to the plate with numerous innovations that helped us transform our programs in a surprisingly short amount of time. Interestingly, just like the pandemic is increasingly shifting towards an endemic, many of these ECE innovations are in increasingly becoming a part of our long-term institutional toolkit and our infrastructure itself.

Our editorial team is extremely interested in hearing from you about your experience and your thoughts about the future of ECE teaching and research. Please share your best practices and innovations that could be of broader benefit to the ECEDHA community. After all, such knowledge sharing is what ECEDHA is for.

We hope to see you at the upcoming 2022 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo (https://www.ecedha.org/Meetings/2022-ECEDHA-Annual-Conference) in New Orleans. This is an opportunity for us to (finally!) emerge from our cocoons and interact with each other in person, under the CDC approved protective guidelines (https://www.ecedha.org/Meetings/2022-ECEDHA-Annual-Conference/ECEDHA-2022-COVID-19-Information ).

In this issue of Source, we are pleased to feature an article from Northeastern University’s ECE Chair Srivivas on effective strategies for crafting winning large (center) proposals. UT Dallas’ Chair Larry Overzet has pioneered a very successful model for a regional Capstone Design Showcase. This model has been so successful that it is increasingly attractive as a model for adoption by all ECEDHA regions. We are also delighted to spotlight UC Santa Barbara’s ECE Chair B. S. Manjunath, and previous Board Member Athina Petropoulou.

Onward!
