Update on the Southwest Regional Meeting


The regional meeting of SWECEDHA occurred November 8 – 9 at the Discovery Park campus of the University of North Texas (UNT), in Denton, Texas. 

The meeting started on Friday, November 8, with the reception dinner held at the University Union of UNT. On Saturday, November 9, Provost Jennifer Cowley called the meeting to order and made welcoming remarks. This was followed by introductions and short comments by the participating chairs. After that, the group focused on four major areas for discussion:

  • Graduate enrollment trends in the region;
  • ExCEllence in Senior Design, the SWECEDHA’s regional Senior Design Showcase, led by Dr. Larry Overzet (ECE Chair, University of Texas at Dallas);
  • Workload Policies and related issues;
  • Discussion of collaboration opportunities within the Southwest Region, including course swapping mechanisms, new joint funding opportunities, diversity career fairs, etc.

A parallel session on November 9 focused on a program for graduate students. The purpose for this program is to bring together of ECE chairs and doctoral students who are interested in academic careers. It started off with a welcome speech by Dr. Murali Varanasi, the founding Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering at UNT, followed by short presentations by the participating students. This was followed by remarks by Dr. Armin Mikler, Professor and Associate Chair of CSE, UNT. After this, Dr. Chunhua Hu from Texas Instruments addressed the students. The day concluded with graduate student presentations, followed by a tour of the college of engineering led by Dr. Tom Derryberry.

Around 14 ECE chairs and 25 graduate students participated the meeting. Overall, a productive regional retreat, enjoyed by all.
