Navigating the Future: 6G and its Role in Next-Generation Connectivity at the 2025 ECEDHA Annual Conference

As we approach a transformative era in telecommunications, we are thrilled to host a must-attend panel at the upcoming ECEDHA Annual Conference: "The Role of Academia in Making 6G Real: Technologies, Challenges, and Opportunities." Scheduled for Saturday, March 22, from 10:30 am to 12 noon, this discussion will provide deep insights into the technological leaps and bounds we are poised to make. The panel will explore the critical role that academia, in collaboration with industry, plays in shaping the future of 6G technology. By 2030, we expect a world where connectivity is ubiquitous and the interplay between humans and machines reaches unprecedented levels of integration. 6G will be at the heart of smart factories, autonomous vehicles, and vast networks of drones and robots, operating with unparalleled reliability, security, and efficiency.

Meet Our Esteemed Panelists Akhilesh Daniels of Keysight Technologies, with over a decade at the company, currently leads as the Director of 6G Business Development. He has been pivotal in steering the development of new communication technologies and previously directed teams that spurred significant advances in 5G, augmented and virtual reality device testing, and battery testing through intelligent automation solutions.

Dennis Roberson, CEO of Roberson & Associates and former CTO of Motorola, merges deep corporate insight with a strong foundation in academic excellence. Professor Edmund Yeh from Northeastern University brings his award-winning expertise in network modeling and optimization to the table. Professor Gil Zussman from Columbia University rounds out our panel with his extensive research in wireless and mobile networks, offering insights into the challenges and innovations within these fields.

Facing the Challenges of 6G

As we forge ahead into the realm of 6G, several critical challenges and unanswered questions remain. The development of 6G technology presents technical challenges that demand advancements in ultra-reliable low-latency communications and massively scalable infrastructure capable of supporting trillions of devices. Achieving new levels of energy efficiency is also a significant hurdle that needs to be addressed to ensure the sustainability of the network. Security and privacy are paramount as greater connectivity also brings increased risks. Ensuring the security and privacy of vast amounts of data transmitted across a 6G network will be crucial, requiring robust solutions to safeguard against breaches and unauthorized access. The societal and ethical implications of 6G are also significant. As the technology aims to integrate deeply into societal functions, addressing ethical considerations around surveillance, data usage, and user consent becomes critical. This integration must be handled with careful consideration of the impact on personal privacy and societal norms. Finally, developing comprehensive regulatory and policy frameworks is essential. These frameworks must keep pace with the rapid development of 6G technologies to foster innovation while protecting user interests. Establishing these standards will be key to ensuring a balanced approach between technological growth and regulatory oversight.

This panel will highlight technological advancements and delve into the hard realities and rigorous requirements needed to turn the vision of 6G into reality. It promises to be an enlightening discussion, offering a glimpse into the future of global connectivity.
