Deepa Kundur Named ECE Chair at the University of Toronto

Professor Deepa Kundur has been appointed Chair of The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Toronto for a five-year term.

Two areas of focus for her during her term as Chair of ECE include faculty expansion and enhancing international research and educational collaborations.

“I’m excited to continue to hire excellent faculty members who reflect the diversity of the greater Toronto area,” says Professor Kundur. “We’re looking for professors working in a broad spectrum of research areas, including the AI engineering field, to join our faculty complement.”

Fostering collaborative research partnerships both within the University of Toronto and internationally is another priority for Professor Kundur, whether through international undergraduate research opportunities or through doctoral clusters with universities around the world.

Professor Kundur first joined ECE at U of T in 1999 as an Assistant Professor. She took a position with Texas A&M University in 2003, and returned to the University of Toronto in 2012, joining as a Full Professor.

A triple alumna of ECE at U of T, Professor Kundur is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE). Her research interests lie at the interface of cybersecurity, signal processing and complex dynamical systems.

She is also a recognized authority on cyber security issues and has appeared as an expert in popular television, radio and print media. Professor Kundur has participated on several editorial boards and currently serves on the Advisory Board of IEEE Spectrum.

Professor Kundur has co-authored over 200 refereed journal and conference papers and has given numerous scholarly and keynote addresses; she has also been the recipient of teaching awards at both the University of Toronto and Texas A&M University.
