IEEE-HKN Awards Program
IEEE-HKN has a comprehensive Awards Program. Annually HKN presents an Outstanding Student Award, Outstanding Teaching Award, Outstanding Young Professional Award, Asad M. Madni Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in addition to the Outstanding Chapter Award and Key Chapter Recognition.
The HKN Awards Program is a great way to recognize your faculty, students, chapter, researchers or alumni. We encourage Department Heads to nominate and recommend individuals for HKN Awards.
Outstanding Chapters are recognized for their service, leadership, community involvement, growth, and overall impact as a chapter. This award is presented annually at the ECEDHA Annual Conference.
The Key Chapter Recognition can be achieved by all chapters based on their completion of core tasks, and optional activities. The core tasks are essential to maintaining an active chapter and the optional activities further assist the chapter in being an active presence on campus and delivering value to the student community. Key Chapter Recognition is presented annually at the HKN Student Leadership Conference.
The Outstanding Student Award
The outstanding student may be described as “outstanding by virtue of scholastic excellence and high moral character, coupled with demonstrated exemplary contributions to classmates, school, and community.”
The nomination of an individual shall only be by an undergraduate IEEE-HKN chapter, and only one nomination per year by that chapter will be allowed. The nominee must be a full-time student in his or her senior year receiving his or her first undergraduate degree in that academic year (1 September through 31 August). Nominations are due on June 30th of each year. This Award is presented annually at the ECEDHA Annual Conference. Finalists for this year's award have been announced. The winner will be announced at the HKN Student Leadership Conference in Houston on 4 November 2023.
Winners for the Distinguished Service Award, Outstanding Teaching Award, Distinguished Service Award and Asad M. Madni Outstanding Technical Achievement and Excellence Award have been announced:
Dr. Karen Panetta, 2019 IEEE-HKN President, Dean of Graduate Education of Tufts University, an IEEE Fellow, and member of the National Academy of Engineers and National Academy of Inventors, was named the recipient of the IEEE-HKN’s highest honor, Asad M. Madni Outstanding Technical Achievement and Excellence Award
Dr. Colleen Bailey is the recipient of the IEEE-HKN C. Holmes MacDonald Outstanding Teaching Award “for her impact on electrical engineering undergraduate education and STEM outreach.” Dr. Bailey is the Faculty Advisor of the Lambda Zeta Chapter at the University of North Texas.
John DeGraw is the recipient of the 2023 IEEE-HKN Distinguished Service Award “for decades of service to Eta Kappa Nu in support of alumni and student award activities.” DeGraw served on the HKN Board of Governors from 2018-2020.
Dr. DongHyun (Bill) Kim has been awarded the IEEE-HKN Outstanding Young Professional Award “for his outstanding contributions toward characterization and modeling of dielectric materials and via structures to ensure signal integrity and reduce crosstalk levels in high-speed digital channels.” Dr. Kim is on the frontier of knowledge in the field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) including signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), electrostatic discharge (ESD) with additional expertise in semiconductor physics. Dr. Kim is a member of the Gamma Theta Chapter at Missouri S&T.
The IEEE-HKN Awards will be presented at the 2023 IEEE EAB Award Presentation Ceremony which will take place Friday, 17 November 2023, during the IEEE Meeting Series in Washington, DC, USA. Congratulations to all!
